While the decision has already been made, the site of Gateway Casino and Entertainment’s Wasaga Beach facility at the other end of town might see activity in 2021.
The company’s bottom line has been hammered by the pandemic (it received a $200-million loan from the federal government in September under the Large Employer Emergency Financing Facility) as lockdowns have forced the closure of existing casinos, and its work to open some of its new gaming facilities has been delayed.
The company recently announced that it remained committed to the project, but has not committed to a schedule for construction.
A Gateway spokesperson has not responded to Simcoe.com’s request for an update.

The municipality’s other major construction project, the twin-pad arena and public library, will also get underway in 2021 at 540 River Rd. W.
A builder is expected to be selected by spring, with construction underway by fall.
It has been budgeted at $60 million, with the town looking to borrow $31 million from Infrastructure Ontario to fund the cost. The town’s portion will be paid for through reserves and development charges.
The town has faced criticism from the Wasaga Beach Ratepayers Association for making a decision to move ahead without funding from upper levels of government.
